Second Grade Lesson on Probability
Here is a great way to introduce Probability to second graders. It's from an article I found on eHow.com. The article, by shares things like: how to Introduce the lesson, Vocabulary, an activity that involves using dice, and how to end the lesson (Closure) in a meaningful way that allows for the teacher to check for student understanding. Check it out!

What happens if you guess - Leigh Nataro
"Will it rain tomorrow? How likely is your favorite team to win the Super
Bowl? Questions like these are answered through the mathematics of
probability. Watch this artistic visualization of your odds of passing a
test if you don't know any of the answers." Lesson by Leigh Nataro, animation by Matthew Saunder
Candy Heart Math
As we teach Probability to young elementary school students, it's great when we can be creative with our manipulatives and keep it fun! I liked this idea from, The First Grade Parade because it uses Candy hearts as manipulatives for the activity about Probability. I think it's especially cool since Valentine's Day is just around the corner.
Her instructions go like this:
Set Up
Step 1. Place a set of conversation hearts in a brown paper bag.
Step 2. Have a bag for each table. In each bag, add a different assortment of colored hearts, making sure that there are A LOT of one particular color.
Teacher's example: "in one bag she put 12 pink, 2 purple, 1 white, 1 green, and 3 yellow hearts. The kids had to reach inside the bag…without looking…and pull out a heart {10 different times}."
"On the corresponding sheet, the kids had to tally the color they pulled."
"If they pulled out a pink heart, they had to put a tally inside the heart labeled pink."
"After each person at their table had a turn to pull 10 different hearts, I had the kids empty their bags so they could see what was inside and then they wrote about it."

She even has printables available of this worksheet below that goes along with the activity! How cool is that!

Introduction
Hello! I'm Emily.Currently, I am studying Elementary Education and hope to make a career in the field of teaching/Education. I'll be honest, math has always been a challenge for me, therefore, my goal here through this semester is to share information as I learn how to teach mathematical concepts. I want to share interesting and fun teaching strategies/activities about Probability that are easy to understand and that will hopefully be a helpful resource for all you future teachers out there!
